Ghajini - Memory & Emotions

“Whistle, whistle, clap, clap” Aamir Khan bashes the goons as he flexes his muscles. Mind blowing!!!

On the whole there are about 3000 emotions which people experience but there are only about 12 emotions out of the 3000 which we mostly access. A great film is one which makes us go through those emotions which makes us feel great for a consistent period of 3 hours.

I feel that movie watching is actually an emotional exercise, the reason being that it makes us go through emotions of laughing, crying, smiling, celebrating, hate, love, arousal ( if it a sex flick), drama, reality ( Madhur Bhandarkar flick), anxiety and many more emotions like those in that 3 hours. And what really makes a movie good is – what kind of emotions the story can evoke amongst the people.

Getting back to Ghajini – the movie makes you go through multiple emotions. It makes you dread at the violence, it makes you sympathize with the protagonist i.e. Aamir Khan, it makes you love Asin, you enjoy the anticipation, you dissolve in the sweet love story, you amaze at the action sequences. The key of the movie is none other than Aamir Khan. The actor delivers through body language, not dialogues. He is highly expressive and makes every facial muscle count.

As I was seeing the movie I was exploring into the emotions which the movie brought alive and now as I write this I am reliving the impact the movie has had on my thinking. Let me outline a few key details that the movie imparts –

1. Crime creates a criminal and to kill the criminal another criminal is born.
2. You never know what lies in the next moment, till then live this moment to the fullest.
3. Passion = Love + Anger
4. Don’t poke into others issues; your own ass is more important than anyone else’s ass.
5. Memory is truth. No memory = who are you? What is this? Is it?

The story is woven effectively and the screenplay is gripping. Every frame has a powerful undercurrent and it keeps you in anticipation of the next frame. The movie could have had better violence making it an out and out action flick. But then this is how commercialization & film certification board at times affects creativity. The director had to keep in mind the impact more violence could have on a section of movie goers and that’s why the tempo of violence suddenly reduces to chasing and punches. It reminds me of famous saying, “Fear is greater than the gift of pleasure.”

Emotions are the key driving force of any human beings. The movie explores two facets of mind – Memory & Emotions. And the movie provides ample evidence that emotions are derived out of memory. The moment a person loses memory emotions are forgotten – Aamir suddenly moves from absolute anger to confusion the moment he gets a memory loss relapse.

At certain levels many of us suffer from the amnesia (memory loss) – like suddenly we can’t spell ‘house’, we can’t recollect the way to our best friend’s house, we can’t recollect a name. I will share a common experience. We meet someone, say Mr. X, after 5 years. His face has changed and we don’t recognize him. He comes up all excited and greets you, but since you fail to recognize him you are blunt at him. Then Mr. X makes you recollect that you had met him at a friends wedding and there you suddenly recollect, “Yeah, yeah, Sanjay’s wedding” and the next moment you are all smiles and the way you talk changes.

Well, Ghajini takes this same experience of amnesia to a higher plane which makes revenge difficult for a man who has lost his love. Personally, I believe that revenge is sweet if it can actually leave you and the other person in a positive state, or else there is really no point, because eventually you end up in more and more pain. However, the best way to save yourself of pain – don’t finger in anyone else’s business, stick to your right, after all you are not immortal.

“Charity, social service & responsible citizen act is all bull shit if it kills you.”

Go ahead and grab your tickets for a fresh experience called Ghajini.

God Bless!!
